Definitely go by what the bag says. This is what my vet always tells me. When Mandie was just 3 lbs and 10 oz, she only got a tad over a half of a cup of food a day. I think even a cup is way too much for him right now. I'd give him 1/2 cup (at most) a day and give a supplement like Nutrical.
With that said, I've always said a puppy can't be overweight. I believe that. So if he WANTS to eat, let him. Just free feed. I always free feed...I think it keeps dogs/pups from going into the mindset that they have to eat everything they see because it will be gone soon. Just my way...everyone is different.
