After Wylie had his LP surg - we did the the xpen type thing. OR, we'd use the xpen to fence off an area for him....as in, Wylie loves this spot in our library - it's truly his Command Center and feels best being in that spot during the day; so, we'd use the xpen not as a circle, but more like as a fence to make a small area for him. He'd always have water and a pee pad right there.
