You can not start any Dog out too young, or too old !

IF you're interested in their health, then, let them set the pace. When they're very young or old, run as far as they want, then walk for a while, usually back toward the house. But, after they reach 9 months to a year, then you can push them some. Trust me, they can take it, and it profoundly effects their physical status in a positive direction, and the stamina you are creating, will hang with them the rest of their lives.

That approach is somewhat like Progressive Resistance Exercising.
