I would just train to pads and then when the pup has that down try adding the outside both at the same times would be a but confusing. A play pen is great. Make sure you are getting a pup from a reputable breeder and your pup is not coming home before 12 weeks or it will need someone with them every couple of hours. I think I would have a pet sitter come over and check on your pup around lunch time if you can not make it home to check on the pup.
