I was thinking the same thing this morning :-/
Dex is 3 months and he would hold during the day (we have left him in his cage alone for whole day few times).
In the evening I also take him out on HIS "command", at night we also wake up to take him out when he starts whining. Do I try to have him wait a little bit?
How big is his pen? I read that dogs wouldn't go and sit in the same place usually, so maybe you should try using smaller space? We have a crate for a big dog with enough space for his bed and pad.
