Oh, I agree. Most dogs have little or no training and are bored half to death. People take them to a puppy class or two and then give up on the training.
Part of my family was very into obedience trials and some agility. While my family were not the neurotic trainers there were some people I met that were just way overboard about having the best trained dog. There were some things that they would train their dogs to do that had no obvious purpose and to me it bordered on abuse just as the idea of dominating a dog seems quite abusive to me at times.
