Red is one of the stiffer BB colors and takes a little longer to break in, mold to the body. You can work the harness with your hands to soften it up, gently stretching and rolling it.
If you use a leather protector product, make sure it is high quality and avoid anything with silicone. I have never put anything on my boys' BBs, but Buddy Belt does officially recommend it.
The main thing is not to fully immerse the BB in water. If the harness does get wet, lay it flat to dry, away from full sun and heat (which can shrink leather). In other words, don't put it in dryer, or lay on a radiator, or put it in the back window of a car.
