Has he experienced anything at all bad while he was home by himself? You could try more exercise and some natural remedy's like a thundershirt and rescue remedy but it sounds like he is really hurting him self so I would go straight to the vet and ask for something to help with it. Callie had a trauma in her crate and broke her tooth and would pant all night no matter what we did it was very bad and nothing worked so we went to our vet and they put Callie on reconcile which can be used for separation anxiety. I would really talk to your vet about it.
