When Jack goes to the groomers (twice a year) I have him cut in a puppy cut. Here is a picture from about a week after one of his cuts last spring.

I keep his hair longer on his head but he gets "bangs" and then he is shaved down everywhere else, except his tail.

I also agree with the OP - talk to the person who will be grooming your pup. I have been taking Jack to the same place for 2 years now and he had always been groomed by one specific groomer. She knew exactly what I wanted because she and I discussed it. This past time I took him in, the owner actually groomed him and ended up taking way too much off his ears (I tend to keep that hair longer too) and I was not happy - even though it is written on his card not to cut the hair on his ears.
