I'm going to say meh! on this report. The way it reads to me is the same as giving too much ice cream to a 1st grader. Given as an occasional treat as part of a balanced diet, they are harmless. Given all the time and not figured into a dog's overall intake, I can see a problem. As far as bacteria, a little common sense goes a long way. Anything your pup mouths and covers in saliva is going to be a bacteria magnet. Absolutely no difference in my mind in handling a bully and prepping a steak or a piece of raw chicken for cooking.
I haven't given Sam a bully yet, but I won't rule it out - in moderation.
