Cold air is fine. Reading posts by the exhibitors here, that is what many use. It's the same for human hair -- heat damages. Show dog coats often have to endure the heat of the flat iron to straighten the kinks from wrapping, but that is only on show days.

Since my boys are mere pets , I use a warm dryer on them during the winter for comfort, but I avoid the face.
