Hello and welcome to YT! We trained Jack to go on potty pads to start with. He was really small when I brought him home and I didn't want him exposed to parvo, fleas or anything else he might catch outside without having all of his immunizations. Then after his immunizations were all done and the weather broke (we live in Northeast Ohio) we started taking him out. He is 3 years old now and prefers to go outside but will use the potty pad if the weather is really really bad.
Izzy is 8 months old and we have her potty pad trained - mainly for the same reasons but she will potty outside when we go on walks. We do travel on occasion and I love the fact that they will go either inside or outside, depending on whatever the situation is. It is really a win-win if you can train them to do both.
