We started our girls out on pads inside the expen attached to a crate. This way they have room to play with toys, have a pet water bottle attached to the side of the expen and we even put a blanket over the crate to make it den-like, and of course nice thick crate pads and blanket. I took them outside about every hour (weather permitting) for more play and some basic training. I never let them have any run of the house while in training. Now they go to the door when they want outside, but they are also pad trained which works super nice when we need to leave them for a little while, and also works great when we travel either in the coach or if we go in a motel. We don't like going out after dark, early morning or in the rain when we are in a motel or coach, so they use their disposable pads. I dearly love that they are trained to pads and outside.
