I don't agree with any of this personally,
Actually, I have used cotton in the ears of my schnauzers and even though the cotton gets wet, water doesn't run into their ear canal and they don't react so harshly when they are bathed. I think it's easier on them. My groomer taught me to do that. It really works pretty well.
