On Jan 18, 2006, a new California Law went into effect, allowing local governments to regulate the neutering, spaying and breeding of specific dog breeds. In the aftermath of a fatal mauling of 12-year-old Nicholas Faibish by his family's pit bull in June 2005, San Francisco's Board of Supervisors unanimously approved an ordinance that requires the neutering or spaying of pit bulls in San Francisco.
On Feb 1, 2006 San Francisco announced that the pit bull and pit bull mix neutering and spaying law will be enforced.
