Cheryl-
I too have had to deal with this in the last two years. Two of my cats...my very first pets "on my own." Both were close to 17. One I had to make the decision to put down and the other one died in my arms. The decision was very difficult for but it sounds like you are a good mom to Avery and would do what is best for him, even if it was painful for you. Felix told me he was ready. The first vet visit I thought my old boy was not going to make it...I found him at home very sluggish. On the way there he perked up and was his lovey self. I had to learn how to give him fluids...I am so scared of needles and Felix was a trooper...the best first patient I could ever ask for. For three months twice a week he let me give him his fluids..he would just stand there. Then he started fighting it one night after I had a horrible time trying to get him to stay still I really looked at him and his quality of life..he didn't look happy and I knew he wasn't having the fun in life that my felix should have. I called the vet the next day and that weekend we went in for our last vet trip. The whole way to the vet felix just laid in my lap. In his way he let me know it was time..and while it was hard I have never regretted the decision.
