If you take him out in the yard to potty try taking him to the same place every time you take him out. Don't walk around. Just stand there and say "go potty" or pick a word or short phrase to say over and over. Take him right back in as soon as he goes and make sure you give him a treat and praise him. That way he will learn he is not out there to play he is out there to potty and he will learn that going potty means a reward.

If you take him for a walk it is different. Usually dogs love the walk. They smell other animals scent and it encourages them to go potty. The exercise also encourages them to really empty the bladder and bowels completely. A young puppy has to learn how to walk on a leash first though. Sometimes practice inside helps. You can try letting him drag the leash around inside to get him accustomed to it. Just don't ever leave the leash on when you are not watching. Short practice sessions are best. Puppies have short attention spans.
