I am interested in other's opinion about signing up for obedience training or even having a private session. Is it worth the money or is it better to buy a book on dog training and do it yourself?

We will be getting a 12 week old yorkie male puppy next week and I want to teach it right from the gecko. I am not looking at anything crazy but just simple commands, not to pull on the leash, not to ASK for human food when you are eating, and to understand that he is not the Alpha-Male in the house. This will be a pet dog and not a show dog.
