They have finally done a recall of the Wagon Train and Milo's Kitchen jerky treats stating that they found trace elements of an antibiotic in the treats. I don't know if that is really the issue but at least they have finally recalled them.

Much of the meat on the market is injected with antibiotics, steroids, and hormones throughout the animals lifetime. Trace elements of these things remain in the meat when the animal is slaughtered. Some researchers are looking into this as possible cause of some health problems in humans.

One thing to be consider is that when you dehydrate these meats it causes a concentration of the injected materials in the dehydrated product thus causing the dog to ingest much larger quantities of the material. I don't think that even now they know for sure what has been sickening the dogs but I'm glad they have recalled them.

I do dehydrate my own chicken for Gracie but I use the all natural chicken that has not been injected throughout it's lifetime. Of course it is much more expensive than the meats on the mass market. Have you seen the size of some of the chicken breasts they are selling? They must have been huge chickens!
