Oh, I don't blame you...I wouldn't want to walk after dark either.
Before we put the fence up I would just walk them around our yard on their leashes.
After he eats his last meal does he go all night with no food? If so, maybe break his meals up into 3 or 4 smaller meals a day while he's young and then gradually work up to just 2 or 3 meals a day. You'll learn what works for him so he's not hungry and what works for you too.
