My Biewer is also barrel chested. She's 12 inches long, and has a 22 inch girth! She has a tendancy to bloat (gas gets trapped in her stomach) which is a common occurance in deep-chested dogs... although more commonly affects larger breeds. It can be life threatening, so I would discuss this with your vet.
