That has scared me for a long time. My hubby smokes in the basement and forgets to move the ashtray when he is done. Huey doesn't get into it much, but as I mentioned in a different thread, he gets things he shouldn't have so he can get a treat in trade. I think my reaction in the past has been strong enough that he knows that is a surefire way to get my attention. He chews on the butt until I get it away. I am so scared he is gonna get nicotine poisoning! I keep the basement door closed, but if it is raining, he has a place down there to potty. So far he hasnt had any adverse reaction, thank goodness.
