Luma is pad trained and never has accidents. We are going to get a boy, and I've heard they are much harder to train. Can I pad train a boy dog? That may be a stupid question, but I have no idea what to expect with a boy!!

Luma has full run of our apartment when we are both gone, which is rare. If I put the puppy in a crate won't it cry the entire time because it wants to get to Luma? Likewise, at night Luma sleeps in our bed. Should puppy have to sleep in the crate? I don't want to cause dominance issues.

Which brings me ti my last question (sorry for so many!) Luma is submissive around other dogs. At least at first. If they keep getting in her face she will bark at them. What kind of puppy personality should I look for? A leader? A loner? I want them to get along and love each other but I do understand it will take time. It will be a while until we actually get another puppy. I am just doing all the research I can so I can be prepared.
I have separate bowls for mine. I also have to monitor their feedings. My boy (Yoshi) grazes. My girl (Momo) is a piggy. So if I don't watch them, Momo will eat Yoshi's food I'm trying to train her to eat out of her bowl only...but it's hard.

Yoshi was harder to potty train than Momo. That may not be the case with everyone though. He still has the occaisional accident. He's neutered, but he still marks on whatever those pieces of wood where the floor & the wall meet - for some reason I can't think of the name of those things right now He also pees on one leg of our piano. I taped up a piddle pad where he marks & he actually stopped doing it! I guess the piddle pad freaked him out. LOL

I never crated mine at night. I guess I just felt bad for them. I'm such a sucker! I had Momo (my 2nd) in the bed at night from day one. I admit, she did pee on the bed twice. But I bought one of those mattress protectors just in case. She learned quickly though & she was good after a few days. Yoshi never peed on the bed & was great with holding it. He was also older when I got him (20 wks). Momo came home at 12 wks.

There's a thread somewhere about a temperament test for new pet owners from "gemy". I'll look for the link for you. I'm getting my 3rd soon & I'm also troubled about what to look for personality wise. Momo is dominant. Yoshi is submissive. I was advised to look for a girl that is not dominant. "Tjdmom" told me that if you cradle the pup like a baby & he/she struggles or looks away, they're more dominant.

Good luck!
