I have a friend who's two kids are allergic to practically everything that you can think of but when it comes to dogs they are only allergic to their saliva so they know not to let dogs lick them.
Definitely take your kids in for allergy testing before you add a dog to the mix, it'll save a lot of heartache down the road.
