Dental Care for Yorkies ? These little guys often retain baby teeth which have to be pulled and that is the easiest thing about Yorkie tooth care. Routine dental checks by your Vet, to assess the bite and condition of a puppies teeth is only the beginning of life long care their teeth will need. Toy dogs are notorious for dental problems.
Veterinarian Dentistry has really grown in the last decade. Things that were only for people are now routinely available for dogs too. Now we know more and most of us try to take care of our babies teeth. With good dental care most Yorkies can keep their teeth their whole life.
My Vet recommends daily brushing with a soft child's tooth brush and dog tooth paste. Each pup needs their own tooth brush which should be replaced every 3 to six months. Only tooth paste made for dogs, should be used. Human tooth paste is not designed to be swallowed and cause a digestive upset. My Vet also recommends dental chews 3 times a week and professional teeth cleaning as needed. (Younger Yorkies seem to need dental cleaning about every 2 years or so. Older Yorkies probably yearly to avoid gum disease and tooth loss.)
As a trainer I suggest beginning dental care from day one, just make it part of your routine grooming.
