We have had yorkies with small children and they did fine. But the dogs and kids grew up together and were taught how to behave. Another small "lap dog" sort of dog you might consider is a maltese. We have 2 yorkies and a maltese and they all do fine together and they all do fine with kids for us. The only problem we have is that one of our yorkies doesn't like the neighbor kids, but that's probably because they are too wild and make her nervous. Our maltese is very good natured and everything I have read about maltese say that they are very sturdy dogs for their very small size. Good luck with finding the right puppy for your family. A lot of it is training the pup and teaching the kids how to get along with and how to interact with the dog properly.
