I have crates for my dogs also, but do not crate them when I leave (they are in the bathroom). I use the crates mainly for traveling to and from the vet or Petsmart. They have access to the crates most of the time and go in them from time to time. Sometimes I will find both of the pups snuggled in one crate together or chewing a bone.
I am leaning towards using the pen and get a travel carrier to bring him to vet and travel.

your idea is wonderful...I didn't think of leaving the crate accessible to him so he can get familiar with it....Thanks for the suggestion!
