Mice meat in the mince? I'd always heard that mincemeat pies were initially made up of mutton, suet, fruits and lots of spices and later other meats were used. I've used pulled beef to make it back when I cooked a lot. It's really delicious made with meat, and reminds me some of sweet and sour pork, curried, or something. Definite old world taste to me in the traditional old mincemeat pies with those delicious, rich crusts. Today's mincemeat pies are nothing like those made when I was young and neither are most of the fruitcakes! Still, if you are a careful and discriminating shopper, you can find excellent bakeries for the old-fashioned versions.

What surprised me was to find that a lot of British wedding cakes were and still are fruitcake, even William and Kate's just recently.
