Our vet told us to never use a collar but to use the harness type. The reason is that our Yorkie babies are prone to Trachael Collapse and the collar puts pressure on the little neck when they pull against the leash. We had a problem finding one tiny enough and wound up with a cat/ferret type that is adjustable as they grow. Also, we only use it when we walk her. Hope that helps!
