I would say something like, "I probably took that the wrong way, but what did you mean by _____ ?" or "I get upset when you say I have gotten fat. I know I am fat but, please don't say that again. It hurts my feelings." Some time you have to be blunt, sometimes you can be very nice.
My mother in-law is very crafty and clever in how she words things lol. She is Greek and they are not dog lovers apparently, more cat lovers. She adores her sons cat but hates my dog. She will say things like.... aww look at the little rat or the worst thing she said to me was when I was going away for 2days and I was upset about leaving Poppy and she said ''no offence but I don't think she will miss you, she doesn't care'' I just said nothing but thought gees hit me when I'm down why don't ya hahaha! Little remarks at me about poppy or directly to poppy lol Wont be long till we have our own place again, cant wait! xxx
