Personality changes CAN occur and research has shown that. But it is not that common at all, particularly with older dogs being spayed/neutered. So don't over worry; truly there is no need.
In terms of your gal being scared of the vet; it still might be possible to work on that behaviour response. I when the pups are young take them to the vets about 2-3X a week. We walk in, they stand on a scale to get weighed, they get a treat and some pets from the staff; and then on we go for our walk or drive. So you can do this for your pet after she recovers. Make it low key, walk in say hi, give a treat and go on and about your day.
I have found this to be very effective for all my animals and none are scared of the vets; in fact the opposite they LOVE going to the vets.
