I would suggest staying away from putting any more hot substances on the rug. If your dog decides it want the rug more than it minds the pepper or whatever you could end up with a sick pet. Only use pet safe substances.

I have found that giving the dog something it likes to chew will stop the destructive chewing. Blocking off the area is a good idea as well.
