Treat the carpet first with any enzymatic cleaner... for really old stains this could take a few attempts over a few days... then steam clean the carpet as you normally would. I had some success using one of those floor steam cleaners, like Shark or other brand, can be used on carpeting too. Any regular carpet cleaning solution will stop the effectiveness of the enzymatic cleaner, so use the enzymes first. Or clean with plain water to get all the solution out of the spots then hit them with the enzymes, may work better. The floor steamer was great at stopping any odors too.
