Adding fiber (4-6 green beans per meal or as a treat) to the diet can help prevent a buildup. Check her for swelling again every 3-4 days until the problem resolves (by diet or meds), then check (not express unless needed) during bath times (every 1-2 weeks).
My Tinkerbell was left at the shelter due to dripping anal glands. Her problem stemmed more from her environment... the family that had her had 6 children, 2-12 years old. At my house with no children, she has never had a problem again. I think the kids terrorized her, as fear can also cause those glands to release. After so much excitement constantly, I believe she just lost the ability to control her glands, or she lived in a state of almost constant fear, as kids tend to get a bit rough with dogs.
It is important to check the glands, because if an impaction does occur, the result will be an abcessed anal gland which will require surgery to repair. |
