I recently saw a wooden pin brush recommended by Oscar's mom so I ordered one. I haven't received it yet, but I'm thinking it has to be easier on the skin than the metal ones.
Also, I sort of do what you are talking about. Mandie's big tangle/matt issues are under her front legs. I keep her under arm area cut way down. I'm still growing her hair out and so far this has been her only trouble spot.
