Ever looked into a Border Terrier? They are 90% going to be my next breed. A good puppy from a good breeder will cost you $1000+ though. Great hardy little healthy breed. They're scruffy and mutt-looking ... manly enough looking for a guy, but most I've met and heard about are great house dogs too... very active but great off switch, love to cuddle, love their people. Less 'terrier' than most other terrier breeds (not alot of dog aggression in the breed). Not huge (13-16lbs is average). And serious cuteness.

If you were looking at larger breeds, Golden Retrievers are often gentle and great with smaller dogs, especially when raised with them. But they can be a lot of work as pups, and also a lot of shedding!

Pugs are easy going, low maintenance, shed a lot, get along with other dogs, aren't so 'fou fou' looking, but they too have a lot of health issues.
