It sounds to me like you are a very considerate dog owner. Everything you are doing sounds reasonable and seems legal. Usually if a dog pees on a tree it has become a peemail box for many dogs. They are just checking and commenting on the neighborhood thread. I was looking up dog pee damage on trees and found this for a good laugh.
