My mom had a similar episode, and it did turn out to be something minor, although with all the blood it looked very serious. When it happened, she had to have a colonoscopy, and they found nothing. The gastroenterologist said that she had some diverticula (little pockets in the large intestine wall that are common as we get older), and one was probably very close to a blood vessel and the blood vessel broke. When this happens, man is it bloody but it will heal spontaneously without any intervention. I hope this is what is going on with your dh.
