Just open it up and turn the wheel toward you... if the needle goes up and down you may be in business! May need to replace the leather belt as they turn to dust in time. Pull the shuttle and bobbin out, soak in WD40 if it's rusty (check the inside too) Use WD40 to clean and free up any sticky metal parts ( also underneath). I squirt it down and let it sit a day, then just run it and squirt more WD40 till the drips look clean, then wipe off the excess and oil everything with sewing machine oil.
There's a ton of info online if you're really interested in getting it functional, and many original parts on Ebay and some 'been in business forever' sewing machine repair shops. They're fairly easy to work on as everything is very easy to access.
