Exclamation Worst Periodontal Disease Seen

I just adopted a four year old yorkie a week and a half ago. I'm the fourth owner of this sweet dog. His first owner didn't take care of him. (The first owner tattooed his name on his stomach.) His second owner made him a stud. His third owner is moving to an apartment and can't keep him.

I took him to the vet because I didn't have much medical information for him, except for proof of a rabies vaccination. He had infected anal sacs, so I have to switch his diet to a high fiber diet. The vet was also shocked at how horrible his teeth look. The plaque was so bad that the vet couldn't see the gum, but he assumes the root is exposed. The vet showed me examples of the disease and said that my dog's teeth are much worse than the picture! The infection has also caused something like strep throat. The vet said that my poor dog probably felt horrible because of the infection in his mouth. He's on antibiotics now to help the anal sac and mouth infections, and he will have to get 8 to 10 teeth pulled. The vet said that after the teeth are pulled, he should feel much better and go on to have a normal, healthy life. After blood and stool tests, his heart and other organs are fine.

Has anyone else gone through this? How much does the procedure normally cost?
