I prefer potty pads because they are convenient & easily portable. If your dog is trained to pads, you can easily take a folded pad in your purse and your dog has potty access wherever you are. I've layed a potty pad down in at friend's houses, at my kid's college dorm/apartment, in the restroom of a store, and even in the trunk of my car. It's alot more difficult to transport a litter box...
So unless you are a complete homebody, I'd recommend potty pads.
