I think I can help you with this question When Jess was a puppy, she had quite a coarse coat and it broke easily too, especially when I brushed her.The matting wasnt so bad on the black part of her fur,but it was awful on the red part (legs, head etc),it was almost as if she had two different textures where the colours changed. It was thicker than it is now and I actually liked the way it looked.
Now at almost 2 years old,her coat is very thin, its super smooth and easy to comb,it doesnt break and its very fine,so much so that pulling it up out of her face isnt even an option because it just falls down after 20 seconds.
Their fur CAN change, infact, many people told me that she would always have a cotton coat that would have no shine to it etc and it hasnt turned out that way at all.I must say that I dont like her coat very much though, its waaay to fine and grows VEEEEEEEEERY slowly, but I guess we cant have our cake AND eat it too lol.
Ladys coat hasnt changed at all though,it was thin and fine as a pup,and thats just how it is now,it also grows incredibly slowly
