It is different for everyone depending on your lifestyle. If you are gone a good deal of the time then you would need a rescue that did not have a lot of emotional or behavioral problems that need to be worked on. Some rescues do have dogs that just need to be re homed due to changing circumstances. If you do go with a rescue make sure you are dealing with a good reputable organization that will help to match you with a dog that is suited to your household and your ability to work with it. There are some places that call themselves "rescues" that are not reliable people.
