I would never send a young puppy to a groomer but more for safely reasons than because it would hurt the coat. Why would your niece want to cut a puppy coat anyway? Sometimes an older puppy may have some crazy hair to deal with but a young one usually still has shorter hair.

I didn't take Gracie to a groomer until she was 6 months and they just trimmed her butt, feet and a little around her face. The next time they really messed her up though. Cutting a puppy coat will not do anything to change what the adult coat will be. You do want to wait until all the shots are done and the puppy is ready to be placed in the hands of a groomer. I really don't think a puppy that is much under 6 months needs a real hair cut.
