Gracie never minded the dryer but when I bought some electric clippers to trim her ears and feet with she freaked out! She had been to the groomer and was fine there so I don't know why she was so crazy about the ones I purchased. Maybe they were louder than the ones she is used to?
It took a lot of time to get her to the point where she would let me near her with them. Much like Alaskayorkie describes. I moved very slow. I would let her sniff them while turned off and then turn it on occasionally. I even pretended to trim one of her favorite toys with it. I had never seen her be really afraid of anything before those clippers showed up!
