With puppies I don't feel like any room is puppy proof enough for a pup because some will chew on EVERYTHING even walls and carpet so I think a play pen is the best idea for a puppy. I would only do free range with an adult dog who is potty trained and wont chew up things and cannot get into anything that can hurt them.
