The thin coat could be attributed to the pneumonia or some dogs will "blow" coat after vacinnes. So it's possible that's the cause and not simply he has a hard silk coat which is thin, will not thicken, nor will it grow very long.

As far as his coat...his head at one time was likely tri colored...it's just faded out. I would expect his back to streaken as he ages. Look for "freckles" on his skin...those areas will usually start coming in darker as he gets older. He will not ever have a "black" saddle though.

With some patience and love I'm sure he'll settle in and be a fabulous pet. Enjoy! So glad your son "found" him.
