I really don't know much about wood, but the little antique dresser I just refinished had a couple on them and an iron burn. I think a water ring is actually damage to the wood and the only way to get it out is to sand it out depending on how deep into the wood it went. Let it dry real good to see if it will lighten and sometimes some wood oil will help for a while but eventually it may need refinished. I know how frustrating that is too, I have a little coffee table that needs to be refinished now because of them too.
