I am not willing to risk heart worms because the treatment it very risky for small dogs. Its kinda funny our first dog when I was a kid took monthly heart worm meds but when she got older she had to be put to sleep because of a disk in her back that broke and our second dog who never had heart worm meds (do not recommend this it was my parents choice just because of money and remembering to do it) at 12 had to be put to sleep because of heart failure and cancer. So I don't think there is a major impact or effect on the dog and I think a dog on prevention is not more likely to have problems. Dogs don't live long lives like humans so when they say it may effect them later on in life not sure how much later on it could be its not like they live to be 100. I will never not use prevention on my dog.
