Don't put the topknot band in too tight or close to head and this will prevent soreness. Joey's breeder said that you should be able to slip a medal comb between the band and the scalp. Some people use a rat tail comb to loosen the band. I know what you mean though, I loved a high pony tail when I was young, and I loved it super tight. It did hurt when I took out the band.
